![]() Its dedicated tabletop RPG system was created after TSR turned down an opportunity to create an official Dungeons & Dragons supplement based on it. It even returned to its roots as the most popular tabletop role-playing game in Japan for a time. In 1990, it became an animated 13-part OVA series, and from then on it branched into movies, manga and TV series (some of which were alternate universe versions of the OVA, but which followed the story in the original novels more closely). ![]() ![]() It first began as a series of role-playing game sessions (with the 1983 Basic Set of Dungeons & Dragons, no less), recorded and transcribed into a series of Actual Play articles in Comptiq Magazine from 1986 to 1988 to commemorate D&D's first anniversary of publication in Japan, which were then adapted into a series of novels by game master Ryo Mizuno, published from 1988 to 1993. ![]() ![]() The explanation for that did not take place until the end of the story and then it was not very good. A little girl gets sucked down a grate in a laundry room in New York City and so did a full grown man. Of all the animals and insects that live underground, this was all she could fit into the story. This mostly takes place underground and the only animals she mentions, are people, rats, roaches, fish and spiders. I did feel she should have gotten someone like Facklam to help her write the story. There were also some surprises I did not see coming. About half way through the story gets more interesting when they are joined by Rip Red, I liked his character. ![]() They said that all Americans have a smell, because we eat so much meat. An epic reminiscent of Infinite Jest, it’s a dazzlingly idiosyncratic work of art that is equal parts exercise in speculative game design, history of a dying empire, and fable about the meaning of play, humanity, and technology. With their newfound immortality, Americans have developed more and more baroque constellations of rules for their favorite game, sending their players on elaborate, millennia-long scavenger hunts across the country. ![]() Told through text interspersed with video and graphics that mix satellite imagery, newspaper clippings, and Telestrated sports-field diagrams, the story follows the sentient space probe Pioneer 9 as it flies over the United States of the future: a land in which no one dies any more, but everyone still loves football. Four years after its first chapter was published on SB Nation in 2017, Jon Bois’s serialized multimedia novella 17776: The Future of Football is still my favorite (and some of the only) “new media” lit online. ![]() ![]() ![]() I've made this mistake before and used this recipe. With this background, they expound on the significance of the Rebelution (A "Revolutionary Rebellion" against low expectations- a "Rebelution") and how people strive for the standards and challenges they are given. They discuss the history of the teenager, the origins of the word (and the period of life) and the consequences of the teen age. In this first section, Alex and Brett tell stories of the early lives of George Washington, Clara Barton, and David Farragut which seem superhuman by today's standards. Personally, that was my favorite part because it showed that the age of adolescence and young adulthood (along with its expectations of rebellion and relative mediocrity) is really quite new, and therefore most likely not God's plan for His children. The first section introduces the movement, its purpose, and its historical context. The book is divided up into three sections with approximately four chapters each. I'll try to explain that a little more in a second. ![]() For anyone not familiar with the Rebelution or Do Hard Things, the goal of the movement is a rebellion against low expectations. ![]() It's a message that many teenagers (and even adults) need to hear.
